Is Balance Truly the Best Way?

Food for thought: is it possible to live a balanced life? If it is, what does that truly mean? The other day I was perusing Instagram and came across this post on balance. It got me thinking. Drop the weight of balance and see how you feel. It is exhausting trying to be balanced all the time. Rest? Train? Self Care? Work? Keep up the house? Something has to give and to be perfectly honest, it is usually self care, rest, or keeping up the house. My whole life is sleep (barely), train (daily), track (all day every day), and work (feels like daily ha). So not everything has to…

How to survive the first of the year at the gym

Swarms of newbies spend the first two weeks of the year promising to hit the gym more often. Equipment seems sparse, weight racks are taken, and showing up at 4 am no longer guarantees your ability to cruise through your workout. Don’t be ‘that’ person Have a little patience. By the second week of January, most people give up on their resolutions. So if you are truly annoyed by the crowds, just wait…they’ll dissipate. Being rude to others never solved anything. Being the reason someone quits going to the gym just makes you a jerk. Everyone deserves to find their own pathway to health and wellness, and just because you…

    New Year, New Me

Happy 2023 everyone! Made you look with that headline. It may be a new year, but I’m certainly the same ‘me.’ I have similar goals and aspirations for this year as I did last year, and the year before, and the year before that. The one major shift I’m working on this year involves the hardest shift of all…and that is mindset. I’ve mentioned this before, but it isn’t so ‘last year’…it is an ongoing transformation project for me. I’ve joined a manifestation challenge, bought a journal, and I’m focusing hard on my goals in the new year. Statistics show that most people quit their resolutions before February every year.…

    Mindset

I wish I actually was the person my trainer thinks I am. My mindset is not in the right place. Running has not gotten any easier. I have not callused my mind enough yet (sorry David Goggins). However, I did buy David’s new book. Perhaps this gives new meaning to “Never Finished”?? πŸ˜‰ What I need to work on Honestly, so many things. Everything? I eat something “bad” or “wrong” and I get down on myself about not being perfect. I was sick last month, and I took a rest day. One. It is the ONE DAY I completely rested in the past year (yes, all 365 days)…and I wonder…

    Don’t Wanna Run…But

Sundays have become run days. I guess we are preparing to be chased by a bear (or coyote, since very few bears live in our part of the world. I would say there are zero bears, but I’m sure there is always a possibility of a bear, even if obscure.) Every Saturday evening, I feel like a toddler throwing a tantrum, just knowing the next day I have to wake up and run again. via GIPHY Running has never been my favorite form of exercise. I wish I could report that after writing that post, I magically transformed my thinking around this activity, but that would be a lie…and I…

    On to the next

Chasing the euphoria of the finish line is a never ending process. A mile away from the finish…feeling broken down, beaten up, tired, and hungry. Ready to say ‘uncle’ and walk off. But –barring injury — the finish line looms large. Once the time chip leaves the wrist, with a t-shirt clutched in muddy fingers, and a celebratory medal over a sunburnt neck, magic happens. As time passes, memories of the suffering don’t linger, they soften. Kinda like childbirth. Signing Up Signing up for the race is like looking at those two lines on the pregnancy test. It is hard to decide whether to feel thrilled or terrified, so why…

Best Buys for Fitness Minded Folks

With so many items advertised as being healthy, what are the products that have caught my eye? Here are my best buys, the stuff I repurchase (or want to!) from supplements to clothing. The best part? The Amazon items are Prime eligible for all of you–like me–who love their Prime membership. Note: some of these are affiliate links, which might earn me a couple pennies. Supplements Clothing Any Suggestions? My trainer has a lot of suggestions that I haven’t really tried. I’ve read good things about the benefits of magnesium as a supplement, but I also haven’t tried that. Preworkout hasn’t always agreed with me (story for another day 🀣)…

One Sandwich Short of a Picnic

As I was staying up slightly later than normal last night to enjoy some college football, I got to thinking about my new ‘normal’ schedule. Some say it is crazy. There isn’t a day–including weekends–that I wake up later than 5 am. I’m either working out at a Camp Gladiator workout, running (even if I hate every minute), or on our recovery days, walking. I’ve signed up for obstacle course races even though I am unable to do a pull up (YET–see…still working on that mental game). I work with a nutritionist, focus on macros and eating more protein, challenge myself to complete programs like 75 Hard, lift heavier weights…

    Hyrox

Do you ever sign up for an event that is more than 3 months away, and you feel like it won’t be that bad? Maybe you are excited at first. But the closer it gets, the more apprehensive you feel. The butterflies start twirling around in your belly when you mentally prepare. You avoid looking at the details of how you should train or physically prepare, just so you don’t have to think about it? Or…is that just me? Hyrox Dallas is 2 months away, and as the days creep past, my apprehension ramps up. I’ve looked at all the details. I’ve glossed over the parts that aren’t my favorite…

    Pivot!

At the beginning of the 75 Hard program, I mentioned starting a new nutrition regimen including more protein and calories than I previously tried. Today I checked my progress via the age-old method, *whispers* the scale, and discovered I needed to pivot (a little). Scale Results To be fair, I’ve been trying to disassociate myself with the numbers. The data is good to be aware of, but at the end of the day, it is just data. And I have made progress, and the numbers are moving in the right direction, just not at the rate that I would prefer to see. So, now we pivot. The good news is,…
